About

The N. C. Little Memorial Hospice is a not-for-profit, independent hospice organization providing expert pain management, symptom control and compassionate care for people living with a terminal illness. We serve patients throughout the State of Minnesota and beyond.

The Little Hospice has earned the community's respect over the years by providing exceptional care to those in need. The Little Hospice is the state's longest serving residential hospice and is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health.

We believe that no one should live in pain; no one should live in fear of dying with their symptoms out of control; and no one should die feeling alone.

Patients of all ages with any illness may be appropriate for hospice care, at the point their physician determines they have a prognosis of six months or less to live. Some of the more common diagnoses we see are:

Cancer
Cardiovascular disorder
Renal disease
Liver disease
Lung disease
HIV/AIDS
Stroke
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Dementia

Our home looks and feels like most comfortable suburban homes. The aroma of homemade soup simmering, cookies baking or "Sunday dinner" in the oven, greet visitors and families as they walk in the door. The homey kitchens, living rooms and fireplaces help families feel welcome and offer a sense of belonging. Fresh flowers abound. Recreation rooms offer space for children to relax and play.

Each patient bedroom has its own television, private telephone, and state-of-the-art hospital bed. Families often bring special items and photographs so patients can feel comforted by familiar surroundings. Family members are welcome to stay overnight in our guest bedrooms or, if they desire, camp out in their loved one's room on a hide-away bed.

FAQ

Our Care

Our care is the kind that our staff would want their loved ones to have.

We are well-staffed with a minimum of two nurses on every shift. Also we have a C.N.A. every morning and evening to assist our nurses with morning and evening cares, plus one or two volunteers on duty from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. The House Manager/Cook is here all day in addition to Administrative Staff, including Nurse Manager, Administrative Assistant and Director. We all work together as a team.

The nurses are very skilled in delivering gentle, loving care to both the patients and their families. They understand medications and can determine quickly what works best. They inform and teach the patient and family in all areas as they provide the care.

Our Interdisciplinary Team strives to meet all physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient. The staff positions are seen as a mission and a privilege, not as just a job. The nurses are hired for their heart, not just for their skills.

We provide monthly continuing education so that we are all constantly learning and growing.

Grief Support

N. C. Little Hospice provides care for families after the death of a loved one. A surviving family member can experience a significant impact after the death. We offer a grief support group that meets monthly at the hospice. The meetings are usually the 3rd Sunday of the month and start at 4 p.m.

Family members and friends are invited to participate. Should someone require one-on-one counseling we are able to refer them to professional help in his or her area.

Also, the bereavement team stays in touch with the family for up to one year after the death of their loved one, including the provision of the JOURNEYS publication from the Hospice Foundation of America.

For Physicians

N. C. Little Memorial Hospice, Inc. is a non-profit organization and is not Medicare certified. Therefore, most of our patients, especially those over 65, are usually, although not required, "case managed" by one of the area hospice programs so that they can receive the Medicare hospice benefit. The patient needs to be deemed "hospice appropriate", that is, six months or less to live, by the physician who would then make the referral to a local hospice program.

The hospice team or hospital team will help place the patient at N. C. Little Memorial Hospice. The physician will follow the patient by phone and sign the death certificate. This "following" physician should have seen the patient within the last 180 days to meet the Medical Examiner's guideline for registration.

On-site visits by the physician are not required unless the patient has not been seen in the last 180 days. Our hospice staff is very skilled in continual assessment of patient needs, changing care as needed and asking for appropriate medications to keep the patient comfortable and safe.

Hospice is a compassionate gift that you can give to your patients and their families.

We would love to have you join the Little Hospice volunteer team. Our volunteers are an important part of the Little Hospice family.

Every volunteer joins our Little Hospice staff to become a part of the nurturing team that embraces the hospice patient and family members. Our understanding and professional team allows our patients and families to feel safe and comfortable as they move through one of life's most profound and difficult times.

Little Hospice relies on many community members to make up our volunteer team. We extend to our volunteers an individualized, in-depth training program to competently prepare them for their tasks. Our volunteers learn to respond with flexibility, compassion, and confidence to the ever-changing needs of the household and its occupants.

On any given day, volunteers may bake muffins, make homemade soup, visit with patients or family members, as well as perform the daily tasks of any home, such as, dusting, vacuuming or doing the laundry. Our goal for all volunteers is that they experience a high degree of personal satisfaction and an on-going sense of personal growth.
